Otten Coffee
Otten Coffee Bali is designed around a clear business idea: customers should understand coffee before being asked to choose it.
Inspired by “Subak of Coffee — From Root to Ritual,” this coffee shop design Bali project translates the interconnected nature of Bali’s Subak system into a spatial journey through coffee origin, process, equipment, experience, community, and personal ritual.
Rather than treating the space as a conventional café or retail store, Manon Design Studio organises each area around what customers need to discover next. Production, education, consultation, and retail therefore become connected parts of one experience, allowing the architecture and interior to communicate the brand while supporting more informed customer decisions.
Turning Coffee Knowledge into a Spatial Journey
The customer experience begins at the entrance and foyer before moving towards the roastery, interpretation areas, single-origin experience, and finally the retail zone.
This sequence gives each stage a clear purpose.
The roastery becomes part of what visitors can experience rather than remaining hidden behind operational areas. Customers are introduced to the process behind coffee before encountering products as purchasing options.
For this coffee shop design Bali project, spatial planning becomes part of the educational journey, helping visitors build context before making a decision.
Subak as a System, Not Decoration
The influence of Subak is translated through layered forms, movement, natural materials,
and the relationship between different areas.
Rather than reproducing the visual appearance of rice terraces literally, the design draws from Subak as an interconnected system in which every part contributes to a larger whole.
Natural stone and textured concrete establish a grounded material base, while timber introduces warmth. Black steel references coffee machinery and production, creating a connection between the industrial and experiential sides of the brand.
Indoor planting adds another layer to this interpretation, reinforcing the relationship between product, nature, and process.
Retail as the Result of Understanding
One of the project’s key commercial decisions is placing retail towards the end of the customer journey.
Visitors first encounter coffee through process, origin, equipment, and interpretation. The retail zone then becomes a place where that understanding can be translated into a more informed choice.
This shifts the space from product display towards education, exploration, and consultation.
Warm indirect lighting and a tactile material palette support a calmer environment where visitors can spend time learning, asking questions, and developing their own coffee preferences.
In this way, the coffee shop design Bali concept supports both customer experience and business purpose.
Project Reflection
Otten Coffee reflects Manon Design Studio’s approach to commercial design: understanding how a brand wants customers to think, move, interact, and decide, then translating that journey into space.
Here, architecture and interior design become part of how coffee is understood, from its roots and processes to the personal ritual each customer takes home.
