Mapogu Bali
A Tropical Café Inspired by the Rhythm of Korean Pop Culture
Located in Goa Gong, Uluwatu, Mapogu is a café and coworking space designed by Manon Design Studio that blends contemporary youth culture with tropical architecture. Inspired by the energy and rhythm of Korean pop culture, the project transforms into a hybrid social-working environment for students, digital nomads, and young professionals in Bali.
Rather than applying K-pop as decoration, the design interprets it through spatial rhythm, interaction, and collective experience.
Climate-Responsive Design Rooted in Bali
Responding to Bali’s hot urban environment, the project integrates cascading greenery, shaded transitional spaces, and large glass openings to reduce heat exposure, filter dust, and improve airflow naturally.
The greenery becomes both a visual identity and passive cooling strategy, strengthening the project’s tropical atmosphere while maintaining comfort throughout the space.
Translating Pop Culture into Spatial Local Experience
Mapogu’s architectural identity draws inspiration from Bali’s natural landscape and contemporary youth culture. Triangular façade forms reinterpret the silhouette of Bali’s mountain landscapes, while layered wave-like ceilings reflect the rhythm of the island’s ocean waves. A palette of terracotta, teal, and black tones is inspired by the natural colors of Bali’s environment, creating a warm yet vibrant tropical atmosphere.
Neon accents are introduced as a subtle representation of Korean pop culture, adding youthful energy and contemporary character into the spatial experience.
The result is a contemporary hospitality space that balances Korean pop culture, tropical climate, and modern urban lifestyle into one cohesive architectural experience.
